General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a diploma programme in nursing and midwifery (Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery). As per the Indian Nursing Council, its duration is three years from the academic year 2015–16 (previously three and a half years). GNM examinations are conducted by the State Nursing Examination Board, and the qualification leads to registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (R.N. & R.M.).Nursing education in India follows the standards of the Indian Nursing Council, which also sets the eligibility criteria for admission; candidates should check their eligibility against the applicable Indian Nursing Council requirements. In Karnataka, GNM admissions and examinations are conducted by the Karnataka State Diploma in Nursing Examination Board (KSDNEB).

Eligibility
As per the Indian Nursing Council:• Minimum age of 17 years (as on 31 December of the year of admission); the upper age limit is 35 years.
• 10+2 with English, with a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination and English passed individually, from a recognised board. Science is preferable.
• 10+2 through a State Open School recognised by the State Government or through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is also accepted.
• 10+2 with English and 40% marks in the vocational ANM course (from a school recognised by the Indian Nursing Council) or in the vocational Health Care Science stream (from a recognised CBSE board/centre) is also accepted.
• Registered ANMs with a pass mark are eligible.
• 5% relaxation for SC/ST candidates; 3% disability reservation for eligible candidates with locomotor disability; other quotas as per the State Government’s reservation policy.
• Candidates must be medically fit; admission is held once a year.
